After being born in Oklahoma, I was raised in the little community of Los Chavez, New Mexico. Upon graduation from Belen High School in 1986, I joined the Army. I attended Basic Training at Fort Dix, New Jersey and Advanced Individual Training at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland. I was then sent to Germany to serve in the 8thInfantry Division. I would later be deployed, as a member of the Army Reserve, to serve during Operation Desert Storm in 1991.
In 1994 I graduated from the University of New Mexico with a B.S. in secondary education. I proceeded to teach math for seven years before attending graduate school at New Mexico Tech in Socorro, New Mexico. Upon receiving my M.S. in mathematics in May of 2003, I was hired by the Navy to work at China Lake, where I continue to be employed.
In April of 1990 I was blessed to marry Yolanda, who had been my very good friend for over 8 years by then. While we were living in Albuquerque, the Lord was pleased to use a neighbor of ours in our conversion. I was convicted of my sin and convinced of my inability to remedy my situation by any efforts I could muster. To the cross I flew, and by grace I was granted repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. My heart of stone was removed and replaced with a heart of flesh, whereby I was enabled through being born again to love the Lord Jesus Christ. Upon my conversion I was given an intense desire to study the Word of God, and this has remained my love and passion ever since then. I am a lover of the Word of God, but more importantly, a lover of the God of the Word.
In February of 1996 we moved back down to Belen, where we began to attend Abundant Life Christian Center (ALCC). The Lord had been pleased to use our time in Albuquerque to introduce me to His Word and to Himself. During our time at ALCC, from 1996 through May of 2003, the Lord greatly increased my understanding of how to live out the Christian life. We were blessed to be surrounded by many godly, mature Christians who were willing to pour the love and grace of Christ into our lives. I was greatly blessed by the brothers and sisters there. It was also during this time that my understanding of theology really began to take shape and was more deeply rooted in my life. It was here that I first had opportunity to preach the Word of God. I remember vividly after the first such opportunity telling myself, “I have just committed occupational suicide.” What I meant was, it was clear that I wanted to do nothing else as much as preaching the Word.
Upon moving to Ridgecrest in June of 2003, we helped to establish the church that is now Cornerstone Bible Church (CBC). We were members there from 2003 through August of 2013. During that time I was blessed to serve as a deacon. In May of 2011, I was elected as an elder/pastor. While at CBC the Lord really shaped my understanding of biblical theology and ecclesiology. This was a blessed time of intense growth in my Christian life.
After leaving CBC, we attended the base Chapel for a few years and then settled at First Baptist Church. It has been my great privilege to serve this congregation in various capacities, and I look forward to being used by the Lord to help His people grow in grace and love for His glory. My desire is the fulfillment of Colossians 1:18b, “that in everything he [Christ] might be preeminent.”
Yolanda and I are the blessed parents of Joey (with wife Shelby and children Nicholas, Nathan, and Amelia), John, Jared (with wife Chloe), Jennifer (with husband Patrick), Joanna (with husband Brandon), Joy, Joelle, and Justine.
